Beach Rules & Regulations
The City of Gulf Shores strives to provide a safe, clean, family friendly
environment for everyone visiting our public beaches. We ask that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the following rules, regulations, and helpful reminders.
Tents and shelters larger than 7 feet by 7 feet and taller than 4 feet are not allowed on public beaches, unless the tents/structures are placed in the designated area at Gulf Place. Individual property owners may allow tents and shelters on private property north of the City of Gulf Shores pole markers provided.
Any structures or equipment left on the public beach after 8 p.m. will be removed and disposed of by beach patrol.
PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED on any of the sand beaches in Gulf Shores. Pets are welcome at Gulf Place along the boardwalk and Town Green, but they may not travel on the sand beaches.
Please keep off the dunes. Staying off the dunes will help us to preserve our dune system and the habitat it provides. Use beach walkover and boardwalks where provided.
Observe and obey the Beach Warning Flag System.
We encourage you to swim near lifeguard protected waters.

Prohibited Items
The following items are strictly prohibited:

No alcoholic beverages
No tents / canopies larger than 7’x7’x4′ unless they are placed in a
designated tent area
No fishing at Gulf Place
No tobacco and e-cigarettes
No motorized vehicles
No digging holes deeper than 12 inches (Please remember to fill holes in for the safety of our residents and visitors)
No fires, grills or cooking devices
No fireworks, sky lanterns, sparklers
No drone operation
No solicitation
Beach Weddings
As a rule, weddings are not allowed on the Gulf Shores public beaches.
If you are renting a private beach house or condominium, and have the permission of the owners to conduct a wedding, no permits are required from the City. You do need to make your guests aware, however, that they cannot park on the road rights-of-way.
No chairs, gazebos, arches, etc. are allowed to be placed on the public beaches.
Gulf State Park, located in Gulf Shores, has a pavilion that is perfect for family and group outings, reunions, beach parties and sunset weddings.
Rental is available 7 days a week, except major holiday weekends during the summer. For more information on pavilion rentals or to having a wedding on Gulf State Park beaches (permit required), call (251) 968-7296 or (251) 968-7245 Wednesday – Sunday.

Beach Warning Flags
The <http://www.gulfshoresal.gov/DocumentCenter/View/2905> Beach Warning Flag System is in place for your safety. Please observe and obey the flag system and all lifeguards. The absence of beach warning flags does not constitute safe swimming conditions. For current surf conditions call 251-968-TIDE (8433). Red Tide
Red tide results from a massive build-up of certain species of microscopic sea organisms known as dinoflagellates. These organisms produce a toxin that affects the central nervous system of fish so they are paralyzed and cannot breathe. At high concentrations, the organisms may produce a discoloration
of the water. Red tides are often referred to as “blooms.” The species
(Karenia brevis), isolated from waters along the Gulf Coast, may produce toxins that also cause skin irritation and respiratory problems in humans.
Health Department officials advise:
- Avoid the area if you are susceptible to respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema.
- Leave the water if you experience skin irritations while swimming or boating and rinse immediately with fresh water.
- If you experience nose, throat or eye irritation when exposed to the gulf mist, avoid the mist.
- Do not eat fish from the red tide-affected area that are lethargic, swim in circles or appear unhealthy.
